This duo piano, as the name suggests, is a performance on two grand pianos that aims to provide us with the richness of modern, twentieth century music written by Dutch and other world-class composers. For instance, Le sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring, 1913) by Igor Stravinsky, is a two-part music for ballet, inspired by the pagan rituals of old Russia, regarding the sacrifice of virgins to the god of Spring. The lugubrious atmosphere in the beginning culminates into the pounding sounds of near-destruction—mirroring the experiences of Europe prior to the First World War.
Meanwhile, Martijn Padding’s Legatos (2005), draws nearer to minimalism by playing with motifs of long, continuous melodies. Steve Martland's Danceworks (1993) was commissioned by London Contemporary Dance Theatre for Aletta Collins's choreography, Shoes.
Laura Sandee and Anna van Nieukerken studied piano together at the Royal Conservatory, The Hague, the Netherlands. Prior to forming this duo, they each played with different groups as soloists. For instance, Laura was with the contemporary piano ensemble, Insomnio, appearing together with Nieuw Ensemble; while Anna was a member of Rodin Pianotrio.
Laura and Anna formed the duopiano in 2002. They appeared together in a number of important music stages and festivals in the Netherlands. In 2009, they were semifinalists of the International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition and finalists of the Almere Chamber Music Competition. This duo has worked with composers such as Reza Namavar and Gustavo Trujillo. Their album is Namavar: Raufarhafnarhreppur fragment (2006).
