Didik Nini Thowok (Indonesia)

Didik Nini Thowok is one of the few artists working today to preserve (and promote) cross-gender art forms in Indonesia. His ability to embody the female character and his skilful performance of traditional dances never fail to dazzle the audience. He fuses classical dance, folk dance, modern dance, and comedy into one compelling package.
Today, Didik is hailed as a dancer and choreographer who preserves the tradition of cross-gender art forms through his dance pieces. On stage, in addition to explaining the many different forms of dance traditions—not only in/from Java—he will also discuss cross-gender traditions more broadly across the Indonesian performing arts landscape.
