Haris Purnomo (Klaten, Central Java, 1956) is an artist who had graduated from STSRI Astri (now ISI Yogyakarta) in 1984. As a member of the Indonesian New Visual Art Movement (GSRBI), Pipa (Kepribadian Apa) and Proses 85, Haris is one among various Indonesian artists who placed visual art as a form of social critiques in the New Order period. However, his photorealism technique in his paintings—that gives us not only realism, but also symbolism and surrealism—proves that he is an artist with supreme skills, and also high sensitivity about his surrounding situations.
Haris has had exhibitions (solo and group) in Indonesia and abroad. His last solo exhibition was Beyond the Mirror Stage, MiFA Gallery, Melbourne (2013). His past exhibitions were, among others: Baby in Transcendent Space, Primae Noctis Art Gallery, Lugano (2012); The Babies: Alegory of Docile Bodies, Bentara Budaya, Jakarta, dan CoCA, Seattle (2009); Di Bawah Sayap Garuda, Nadi Gallery, Jakarta (2006).
He has also been participating in group exhibitions ever since he was still studying in Yogyakarta. The last group exhibition he participated in was ArtJog 13: Maritime Culture, Taman Budaya Yogyakarta (2013). Before that, he participated in Scope Basel and Prague Biennale (2009); Reflective Asia, Nanjing Triennale (2008); and also in exhibitions that marked Haris’s contribution in the visual art movements: Pasaraya Dunia Fantasi, TIM, Jakarta (1987), Seni Rupa Lingkungan, Galeri Ancol, Jakarta (1985); and Kepribadian Apa, Galeri Seni Sono, Yogyakarta (1977, 1979).
Other than exhibiting his works in different media, Haris has also been involved in various performance arts, among others, Menonjok Kehidupan di Atas Ring, STSRI Asri, Gampingan, Yogyakarta (1983), and Future Shock, Malioboro, Yogyakarta (1982).
Haris’s artworks have won several art awards, including The Schoeni Prize from Sovereign Art Foundation, Hong Kong, and Pratitha Adhikarya (2007).
Haris Purnomo works from his studio Roemah 9A in Cibubur, East Jakarta.
