Melati Suryodarmo

Melati Suryodarmo was born in Surakarta, Central Java, 1969, and now lives and works in Gross Gleidingen and Surakarta. After completing her education at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences Padjajaran University, Melati continued her schooling at the Braunschweig School of Art, Braunschweig, Germany, majoring in Performance Art, under the tutelage of Prof. Marina Abramovic. Melati's works emerge from the world within her body. For her, the body functions as as a container for memories and organisms that continue to live. Melati's works, that have been included in many international festivals and exhibitions this past 13 years, have brought her public to their own individual perceptions. Her most recent solo exhibition was “Acts of Indecency”, held earlier this year at the Art Department, VWFA, Jakarta. Every year since 2007, together with Padepokan Lemah Putih, Melati holds a Performance Art Laboratory Project and an “undisclosed territory-performance art event”, which draws the participation of artists from home and abroad.
