Redy Rahadian was born in Cianjur, West Java, 17 May 1973. He completed his education at the Mechanique Garage Department, Institut Saint Joseph, Brussels, Belgium. His sculptures are made from metal, especially steel, light-weight steel, or bronze. His sculptures portray human figures and objects that have been distorted in such a way that they appear skinny and light, yet strong and imbued a profound sense of motion. Sometimes, these distortions elicit humor, as well as satire. His works are often considered as contemporary art mainstays in auction houses across Jakarta, Singapore and Hong Kong.
His solo exhibitions are “Heavy Metal Stories”, Nadi Gallery, Jakarta (2008); “Interarction”, Edwin Gallery, Jakarta (2007); and “Intensitas” (Intensity), Galery Lontar, Jakarta and China (2005). Meanwhile, he has participated in some group exhibitions, include: “Lintas” (Cross), Edwin's Gallery, Jakarta (2011); “New Age—New Blending: New Generation Chinese & Indonesian Artists Exchange”, New Age Gallery in Cooperation with Edwin's Gallery, in Beijing, China (2008); “12th Jakarta Biennale”, Taman Ismail Marzuki, Jakarta (2006); “Singapore Art Fair”, Taksu Gallery, Singapore (2005); “Treshold”, Museum Affandi, Yogyakarta (2004); and “Patron of the Arts”, Alila, Jakarta (2002).
In 2003, Redy Rahardian won the Metro TV Eagle Award Sculpture Trophy and was awarded the public sculpture project at Sun Plaza, Medan, North Sumatra.
